    Guest Editors' introduction: philosophical contributions to leadership ethics

    This article introduces the first of two special issues on philosophical approaches to leadership ethics. In it, we show some of the ways that philosophy contributes to the study of leadership and leadership ethics. We begin with an overview of how philosophers have treated some of the ethical aspects and challenges of leadership. These include discussions of self interest, the problem of dirty hands, responsibility, moral luck, power, gender and diversity, and spirituality. The articles in this issue draw on philosophy to explore a variety of ethical questions related to leadership and the relationships that leaders have with followers and others

    Trust and privacy in distributed work groups

    Proceedings of the 2nd International Workshop on Social Computing, Behavioral Modeling and PredictionTrust plays an important role in both group cooperation and economic exchange. As new technologies emerge for communication and exchange, established mechanisms of trust are disrupted or distorted, which can lead to the breakdown of cooperation or to increasing fraud in exchange. This paper examines whether and how personal privacy information about members of distributed work groups influences individuals' cooperation and privacy behavior in the group. Specifically, we examine whether people use others' privacy settings as signals of trustworthiness that affect group cooperation. In addition, we examine how individual privacy preferences relate to trustworthy behavior. Understanding how people interact with others in online settings, in particular when they have limited information, has important implications for geographically distributed groups enabled through new information technologies. In addition, understanding how people might use information gleaned from technology usage, such as personal privacy settings, particularly in the absence of other information, has implications for understanding many potential situations that arise in pervasively networked environments.Preprin

    Electrical conduction of silicon oxide containing silicon quantum dots

    Current-voltage measurements have been made at room temperature on a Si-rich silicon oxide film deposited via Electron-Cyclotron Resonance Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (ECR-PECVD) and annealed at 750 - 1000 ^\circC. The thickness of oxide between Si quantum dots embedded in the film increases with the increase of annealing temperature. This leads to the decrease of current density as the annealing temperature is increased. Assuming the Fowler-Nordheim tunneling mechanism in large electric fields, we obtain an effective barrier height ϕeff\phi_{eff} of \sim 0.7 ±\pm 0.1 eV for an electron tunnelling through an oxide layer between Si quantum dots. The Frenkel-Poole effect can also be used to adequately explain the electrical conduction of the film under the influence of large electric fields. We suggest that at room temperature Si quantum dots can be regarded as traps that capture and emit electrons by means of tunneling.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, submitted to J. Phys. Conden. Mat

    Why does early childhood deprivation increase the risk for depression and anxiety in adulthood? A developmental cascade model

    Abstract Background: Using data from the English & Romanian Adoptees (ERA) study we recently reported that early time-lmited exposure to severe institutional deprivation is associated with early onset and persistent neurodevelopmental problems and later onset emotional problems. Here we examine possible reasons for the late emergence of emotional problems in this cohort. Our main focus is on testing a developmental cascade mediated via the functional impact of early-appearing neurodevelopmental problems on late adolescent functioning. We also explore a second putative pathway via sensitization to stress. Methods: The ERA study includes 165 Romanian individuals who spent their early lives in grossly depriving institutions and were subsequently adopted into UK families, along with 52 UK adoptees with no history of deprivation. Age six years symptoms of neurodevelopmental problems and age 15 anxiety/depression symptoms were assessed via parental reports. Young adult symptoms of depression and anxiety were assessed by both parent and self-reports; young adults also completed measures of stress reactivity , exposure to adverse life events and functioning in work and interpersonal relationships. Results: The path between early institutional deprivation and adult emotional problems was mediated via the impact of early neurodevelopmental problems on unemployment and poor friendship functioning during the transition to adulthood. The findings with regard to early deprivation, later life stress reactivity and emotional problems were inconclusive. Conclusions: Our analysis suggests that the risk for adult depression and anxiety following extreme institutional deprivation is explained through the effects of early neurodevelopmental problems on later social and vocational functioning. Future research should more fully examine the role of stress susceptibility in this model

    Do differences in developmental mode shape the potential for local adaptation?

    No embargo requiredFuture climate change is leading to the redistribution of life on Earth as species struggle to cope with rising temperatures. Local adaptation allows species to become locally optimised and persist despite environmental selection, but the extent to which this occurs in nature may be limited by dispersal and gene flow. Congeneric marine gastropod species (Littorina littorea and L. saxatilis) with markedly different developmental modes were collected from across a latitudinal thermal gradient to explore the prevalence of local adaptation to temperature. The acute response of metabolic rate (using oxygen consumption as a proxy) to up-ramping and down-ramping temperature regimes between 6-36ºC was quantified for five populations of each species. The highly dispersive L. littorea exhibited minimal evidence of local adaptation to the thermal gradient, with no change in thermal optimum (Topt) or thermal breadth (Tbr) and a decline in maximal performance (μmax) with increasing latitude. In contrast, the direct developing L. saxatilis displayed evidence of local optimisation, although these varied idiosyncratically with latitude, suggesting a suite of selective pressures may be involved in shaping thermal physiology in this relatively sedentary species. Our results show that the biogeography of thermal traits can differ significantly between related species, and show that inter-population differences in thermal performance do not necessarily follow simple patterns which may be predicted based on latitudinal changes in environmental temperatures. Further research is clearly required to better understand the mechanisms that can lead to the emergence of local adaptation in marine systems and allow improved predictions of species redistribution in response to climate change

    The golden circle: A way of arguing and acting about technology in the London ambulance service

    This paper analyses the way in which the London Ambulance Service recovered from the events of October 1992, when it implemented a computer-aided despatch system (LASCAD) that remained in service for less than two weeks. It examines the enactment of a programme of long-term organizational change, focusing on the implementation of an alternative computer system in 1996. The analysis in this paper is informed by actor-network theory, both by an early statement of this approach developed by Callon in the sociology of translation, and also by concepts and ideas from Latour’s more recent restatement of his own position. The paper examines how alternative interests emerged and were stabilized over time, in a way of arguing and acting among key players in the change programme, christened the Golden Circle. The story traces four years in the history of the London Ambulance Service, from the aftermath of October 1992 through the birth of the Golden Circle to the achievement of National Health Service (NHS) trust status. LASCAD was the beginning of the story, this is the middle, an end lies in the future, when the remaining elements of the change programme are enacted beyond the Golden Circle

    Magnetic resonance imaging findings in children with Parry-Romberg syndrome and en coup de sabre

    BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to: (i) describe the abnormalities seen on brain imaging in a group of children with en coup de sabre (EDCS) with/without Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS); and (ii) identify clinical predictors of brain imaging abnormalities. METHODS: This was a single centre (Great Ormond Street Hospital, London) retrospective case series of patients with ECDS/PRS seen from 2000 to 2018. We identified patients with cutaneous manifestations consistent with the clinical descriptions of ECDS/PRS. Presenting clinical, laboratory, and radiological brain findings are described. Results are expressed as medians and ranges or frequencies and percentages. Fisher's exact test was used to identify clinical associations with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) abnormalities. RESULTS: Fourteen patients were studied: 6 males and 8 females; median age 14 years (range 3-20). We observed neuroimaging abnormalities in 2/6 ECDS and 5/8 ECDS/PRS patients. White matter signal abnormality, dystrophic calcification, leptomeningeal enhancement, and sulcal crowding were the typical findings on brain imaging. A total of 50% of patients had no MRI abnormality despite some of these patients having neurological symptoms. The presence of seizures was significantly associated with ipsilateral enhanced white matter signalling on MRI (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In summary, we observed several distinct radiographic patterns associated with ECDS/PRS. Seizure disorder was strongly associated with the presence of ipsilateral enhanced white matter signalling. Improved neuroimaging techniques that combine morphological with functional imaging may improve the detection rate of brain involvement in children with ECDS/PRS in the future

    Electron and hole mobility reduction and Hall factor in phosphorus-compensated p-type silicon

    The conductivity mobility for majority carrier holes in compensated p-type silicon is determined by combined measurement of the resistivity and the net doping, the latter via electrochemical capacitance-voltage measurements. The minority electron mobility was also measured with a technique based on measurements of surface-limited effective carrier lifetimes. While both minority and majority carrier mobilities are found to be significantly reduced by compensation, the impact is greater on the minority electron mobility. The Hall factor, which relates the Hall mobility to the conductivity mobility, has also been determined using the Hall method combined with the capacitance-voltage measurements. Our results indicate a similar Hall factor in both compensated and noncompensated samples.This work was supported by the Australian Research Council ARC and by the DAAD/Go8 researcher exchange funding scheme
